Black clay triangular flat teapot by Tokoname ware artist Tokuta Fujita.

The most distinctive feature of this teapot lies in its unique form. Viewed from the side, the flat, inverted trapezoidal body is wide at the top and narrows towards the bottom, spreading out horizontally.

Combined with the silvery-black color reminiscent of roof tiles on traditional Japanese houses, it exudes a serene yet powerful presence. The surface has a natural sheen, and its beauty has depth, subtly changing depending on how the light hits it. The angle and size of the handle are exquisite, fitting comfortably in the hand and providing exceptional usability.

The lid is carefully finished using the Tokoname-specific "rubbing" technique to fit snugly against the body. The tea strainer inside the teapot is also handmade from the same clay, demonstrating no compromise on detail.

Each teapot is handcrafted by the ceramic artist using a potter's wheel. The lines remaining on the inside are proof of the wheel-throwing process. The surface is not overly smooth, giving it a warm feel to the touch.

This teapot has a capacity for 1-2 people using Japanese teacups/bowls, and 3-4 people using Chinese/Taiwanese teacups. It can be used for green tea, as well as oolong and pu-erh tea. The wide base of the teapot enhances the taste of the tea rather than its aroma.

*Tokoname ware

Tokoname ware is pottery made in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture. It was the largest pottery production area in Japan during the Middle Ages, producing a wide range of items from everyday objects to large ceramic pieces. From the late Edo period (around 1858), red clay tea sets and sake sets were also produced, and from the mid-Showa period (1962) onwards, the technology for electric kilns suitable for red clay was established.

The Tokoname region, which was once the bottom of a lake called Lake Tokai millions of years ago, has fine-grained clay suitable for teapots, such as red clay. Known as Japan's largest teapot production area, it boasts a concentration of advanced molding techniques, including the "rubbing" method.

FAQ

Which type of of tea can I brew with the teapot?

It can be used for any type of tea. However, unglazed pottery is more likely to absorb the flavor of the tea leaves. By using different tea utensils for each type of tea, you can enjoy the flavor of the tea to the fullest.

For example, in the case of Japanese tea, sencha, fukamushicha, genmaicha, and gyokuro are all in the same family, but since hojicha has a strong roasted aroma, we recommend using a different tea utensil.

However, glazed pottery or porcelain tea utensils do not absorb the flavor of the tea leaves, so they are suitable for brewing various types of tea.

How do you wash a teapot?

Please wash the teapot with water, without using detergent. Ceramic teapots easily absorb detergent ingredients, which can affect the flavor of the tea.

Tea leaves remaining in the teapot are the main cause of tea stains. After brewing tea, we recommend removing the tea leaves once they have cooled and rinsing them with water.

Moisture remaining in the teapot can cause mold. Turning the teapot upside down will help it dry faster.

We do not recommend washing it in the dishwasher. Please wash by hand.

Can I remove tea stains from a teapot?

Here's how to remove tea stains.

1. In a bowl or pot, mix 24g of baking soda with 1 liter of water at 30-40°C.

*Do not use aluminum or Teflon-coated pots as they will react with baking soda.

2. Leave the teapot in the water mentioned in step 1 for 30-60 minutes.

3. Wipe off the tea stains with a soft sponge or cotton swab. Do not use hard sponges or brushes.

4. Rinse the teapot with water.

5. Thoroughly dry the teapot.

*Baking soda water may irritate your hands, so wear rubber gloves.
